From 31 December 2024 the Home Office is changing the way people prove their immigration status. Biometric residence permits are being replaced by a digital system, known as an eVisa.

To access the eVisa you need to set up an online account with UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI).

GMIAU are concerned that many people won’t be aware of this move to digitalisation and may face problems in the process. Our updated advice on eVisas is here.

eVisa Guide

With pro bono support from Dechert LLP we have put together a guide (PDF download) to raise awareness and to provide an overview of the application process.

With thanks to translation company, welocalize, we are able to provide the guide in the following languages:

From 9 January 2025 we will also be offering direct assistance in applying for an eVisa.

We are able to assist anyone who requires support with the process, but we will prioritise those who have claimed asylum in the UK and:

  • who have been granted leave as a refugee; or
  • granted humanitarian protection; or
  • granted leave to remain on the basis of their human rights; or
  • were initially granted under any of the above categories and now hold Indefinite Leave to Remain.

These sessions are supported by volunteers at Clyde and Co and Squire Patton Boggs.

GMIAU would like to thank all our pro bono partners, PILnet and the Global Refugee Forum Legal Community Pledge.
