Last week marked my first week as CEO of GMIAU. I’m delighted to introduce myself to our friends and supporters and tell you a bit about myself.

In my career, I’ve always focused on tackling social injustice. Before joining GMIAU I spent 8 years as CEO of Sefton Women’s and Children’s Aid (SWACA), a charity supporting survivors of domestic abuse, including people with insecure immigration status. At SWACA I helped to develop Sefton’s first bespoke women’s refuge, was involved in commissioning new services for women and children, and advocated for women’s rights on a local and national level. As a trained social worker, teacher, and practice educator, I bring safeguarding expertise and many years’ experience across the voluntary sector – experience I’m excited to build on here in Greater Manchester.

My background aligns with GMIAU’s work supporting people experiencing housing and homelessness, and with survivors of domestic abuse. I’m excited by GMIAU’s vision and values, and I’ve started to see how they are reflected in our day to day work. Our work is complex, trauma-laden, demanding – and incredibly important. I’ve already seen the passion and commitment that drive GMIAU’s team, and I’m proud to be part of it. 

While I have now taken on the role of CEO, Denise is still working in the background until the end of the year. It’s a privilege to have her support and be able to learn from her during this period. 

We’re operating in a difficult context, where racism and anti-migration rhetoric are on the rise. It’s crucial that GMIAU continues to stand up against attempts to divide our communities, and fight as we always have for justice, dignity, access to legal support and human rights. I’m looking forward to leading this remarkable organisation as we continue that fight together.
