Homelessness & Crisis

Our Destitution Team supports people who are in crisis. Adults without children in Greater Manchester can get help through the Restricted Eligibility Support Service (RESS). Families or adults elsewhere in the North West should use our advice form.

No one should be made homeless or destitute because of their immigration status. Our Destitution Team supports people who are in crisis.

That may be rough sleeping; facing eviction; fleeing abuse; or when a child has been wrongly age assessed and placed in inappropriate accommodation.

Several team members are qualified immigration advisers, allowing them to address both immediate emergencies and the underlying immigration issues. We will legally challenge when people are being denied support they are entitled to.

We can help with

  • Asylum support, including applications for support; appeals; advice on discontinuations; applications for extra payments for children and exceptional circumstances

  • Applications for Schedule 10 (support for people on immigration bail who haven’t been in the asylum system)

  • Applications to change the No Recourse to Public Funds condition

  • Immigration applications for people facing homelessness

  • Ensuring families and adults with care needs get local authority support

  • Help with healthcare (challenging NHS fees and charges)

  • Referrals for age disputed children to local authorities and legal support

  • Signposting and referrals for help with food, benefits, housing, and access to healthcare

If you are a single adult facing homelessness in Greater Manchester, refer to the RESS Project.

For everyone else facing homelessness, make a referral to GMIAU.
